Dublin's hugely successful bike share rental scheme was introduced in September 2009 and has gone on to become one of the most successful bike share rental schemes in the world. dublinbikes are a key element in JCDecaux's contract with Dublin City Council to enhance the urban environment and provide services to the city. Over the years the scheme has undergone a number of expansions and there are now 118 stations and 1,600 bikes. In March 2021 'e-dublinbikes' were introduced with half the fleet being upgraded to hybrid electric bikes.

It is vital for Dublin city that the public have access to viable and sustainable modes of transport. dublinbikes has played a huge part in the accelerated growth of cycling in Dublin and it is now rightly seen as integral to the public transport network.
